The rather interesting grain whisky made up of 50% malted barley as well as 50% wheat returns to represent the 'Borders' part of craft distillers Raasay and Borders.
The Borders 2nd Release follows the same ageing process as theinitial release first maturing the spirit in former bourbon casks, before finishing in ex-Oloroso sherry. However, the 2nd Release casks are then re-racked in ex-bourbon casks once more, with the intention being to balance a signature Sherry style with more classic bourbon characteristics.
Distilled in the Highlands, Borders Single Grain Second Release is non-chill filtered, caramel free and was bottled at 51.7%.
Nose: Initial aroma of dried apple rings and nut mix, sweet malt develops, before nectarines and a touch of raspberries reveal notes of the rich Sherry.
Palate: Nutty Oloroso and vanilla spice burst to the fore, citrus fruits, oak tannins, and honeycomb slowly arrive.
Finish: Rich, spicy and medium length. Delicious.
